17th Annual MAITLAND CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL

The Maitland and District Development Association presents the 17th Annual MAITLAND CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL November 24 to 27 2011. Join us for a weekend of fun and festivities in and around the Historic village of Maitland, Hants County.

Events include:

A GATHERING - 7:00 pm Thursday November 24, Maitland Fire Hall. Opening the Festival with an evening of entertainment, refreshments, Santa and lots of fun! All welcome.

HISTORIC HOME TOURS - 5:00 to 9:00 pm Friday November 25, 10:00 am to 8:00 pm Saturday November 26 and 12:00 to 6:00 pm Sunday November 27. Three historic homes in Maitland and Selma are decorated for the season, $15.00. Tickets available at MacQuarries Pharmasave in Brookfield and the Esplanade, Frieze & Roy General Store in Maitland, Onslow Historic Lumber 6 Havelock, Truro and at the Festival on the weekend.

CHRISTMAS ART AND CRAFT FAIR - 5:00 to 9:00 pm Nov 25, 10:00 to 8:00 pm Nov 26 and 12:00 to 6:00 pm Nov 27 At Gallery 215, 8247 Highway 215, Selma. A selection of original and unique crafts, art and edibles from a variety of local artisans and craftspeople displayed in a country store setting. No admission.

Gallery 215 is now closed for the 2011 Season. Look to see the Gallery return in June of 2012 with many of your favourite artists bringing in new work and new artists joining the gallery.

And don't forget the 2011 Maitland and District Development Association presentation of the Maitland Christmas Festival which takes place in Maitland and surrounding communities the weekend of November 25, 26 and 27, 2011. Gallery 215 closes for the season on October 16. Join us before 5 pm anytime before that day and pick up that special piece of art you have been eying all season.
Our Annual Harvest Lunch is October 16, 11:00 am until 3:00 pm or when the food runs out! The final fund raising luncheon for the Maitland and District Development Association has an emphasis on local and seasonal ingredients. Your choice of Corn Chowder or Chili with Cheese Biscuits. Followed by a selection of desserts including Gingerbread and assorted Pie!
The Local Landscape show is still up and lots of work by our Gallery artists in Gallery 2.

Culture Days At Gallery 215

Culture Days weekend at Gallery 215 was very well attended. We featured what is becoming our annual rug hooking show and display with a chance for folks to try the craft themselves, thanks to Anita Duckenfield and Gail Wynn for the demos. Our giant cooperative painting took on a whole new direction on Sunday and we think it has ended up as a truly Canadian piece. And, Stuart Taylor, one of our gallery artists, brought in some tools and wood for people to learn a bit about wood turning. Free cookies from heritage recipes were gobbled up and our Sunday fund raising luncheon was sold out.
Gallery 215 is open until October 16 and closing day we have our Harvest Lunch. The last chance to pick up that piece of art you have been eying all season. Open daily 10 to 5 pm until then!

The Local Landscape Show Reception

The Local Landscape Show reception was held September 18 and a lovely afternoon at the gallery. Lots of artists, friends, neighbours, family and the public attended and snacked on the free refreshments and took in the show with work of 46 of our gallery artists represented. There were sales of artwork and lots of conversation. The show remains up until October 16.

Gallery 215 gets a new paint job!

Gallery 215 has received a new exterior paint job! Our painters, Pam and Don, who worked on several inside jobs throughout the winter, have returned in August and today are finishing the work on the outside of the building. The Gallery is now a bright white again with the beautiful red gingerbread trim. Pictured here are the "painter's assistants"!

Celebrate September at Gallery 215

Gallery 215 celebrates September with a Landscape show, running September 10 to the end of our season. Gallery artists are bringing new work and the show will be featured in Gallery 1. Opening Reception for this show is Sunday September 18, 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Join us for snacks and spot your favourite Nova Scotia scene!
September 11 is one of the Occasional Gallery lunches, a fund raising effort of the gallery. 11:00 to 2:00 pm.
September 30 to October 2 is Culture Days in Canada, Gallery 215 hosts what is becoming our annual rug hooking display with rug hooking demonstrations and a chance to try your hand at this throughout the weekend. Stuart Taylor, one of our gallery artists will show some of his wood turning techniques on October 2. Free snacks all weekend and another occasional fund raising Sunday Luncheon on October 2.

Gallery 215 hosted a painting workshop on Friday August 12. The instructor was Judy Arsenault and the participants all appeared to have a good time and learn lots! And look at that glorious and elusive bright blue sky shining down on all.

August 9, 2011 Drawing Animal Workshop with Susan Sweet at Gallery 215,animal models included Circa, graciously posing while on the job with owner Christina at Studio Glass and Rosie, who came to the gallery and posed along with owner Gwen. We also drew Roy's horses in the field and enjoyed a busy day trying different techniques and materials.

Gallery 215 July 31 Luncheon

Sunday July 31 is one of Gallery 215's occasional Summer Luncheons. The menu is Chef's Choice and this Sunday the main course will feature a choice of 1. Smoked Salmon and Asparagus Quiche, 2. Vegetarian Mediterranean Quiche, or 3. Fusilli Pasta with Tomato/Meat and 3 Cheese Sauce. Accompanied by a Villager Salad and roll or scone. Dessert is New York Style Cheesecake with In Season Berry Compote or the Decadent Selma Carrot Cake.
Luncheon is served from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm and reservations are recommended. Call the Gallery at 261-2151 to make yours!
And if you purchase a minimum of $50 worth of art work you will receive a Free Dessert Voucher good for any of the Summer Luncheons.

Gallery 215 artists at the NSAC Thursday July 21

Several Gallery 215 artists will be painting at the Gardens at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College on July 21, 10 am to 2 pm. Artists include Lyndia Baird-Wellwood, Janice Guinan, Pamela Swainson and Susan Sweet. The artists will have several small items available to purchase during that time as they paint in the gardens. Following the paint out, the NSAC has booked the Marigold Centre on Prince Street in Truro to have a show of work by the 11 participating artists and the theme is Agriculture. The opening reception for that show is August 11 at 7 pm. All are welcome for both these events!

Gallery 215 features our four photographers from July 8 to July 22.
Anthony Kawalski is lives right here in Selma and he has several framed photographs on display as well as prints that are ready for framing and an electronic slideshow of all these images is available for viewing here in our Gallery 2. Rick McKinnon, of Princeport, has several sizes of framed work, and two sizes of matted, ready to frame prints to browse through. John Schickler from Debert not only has framed photographs in the gallery, but he has acrylic seascape paintings as well. Anthony Storer, Stewiacke, also a writer, has beautiful framed images found in our "Little Art Room".

Gallery Artists Involved in Truro Shows

Several Gallery artists are getting set to show work in 2 upcoming shows in Truro this week.
Lyndia Baird-Wellwood is presenting "For The Love Of Our Lighthouses" at the Marigold Centre, 605 Prince Street, Truro. Lyndia is showcasing a series of paintings of Nova Scotia lighthouses and their role in our history. The opening for this show is July 7 at 7 pm and the show runs until July 31. Open Monday to Friday 9 to 5.
And opening July 5, 7 pm, at the McCarthy Gallery, 36 Arthur Street is the Elizabeth Bishop Art Exhibitions "Great Village" and "In the Village". These shows are sponsored by the Elizabeth Bishop Society of Nova Scotia and the Truro Art Society to celebrate the 100th birthday of poet Elizabeth Bishop. Gallery 215 artist Carol Morrison is one who has work in this show. The show runs to August 17, open Mon to Fri 9 to 4.

POETRY READING WITH SUSAN McMASTER

Sunday June 26 Gallery 215 hosted a poetry reading with the President of the Canadian League of Poets, our own Susan McMaster who has made the Minas shoreline her home for 8 summers now.

Susan entertained gallery visitors as they lingered over a delightful luncheon. She read from several of her 20 publications, anthologies and recordings, with many of the work appearing in the latest book; "Paper Affair: Poems Selected and New".

Many thanks to Susan for this, her third reading at Gallery 215, she is an enthusiastic friend of the gallery and this is mutual! An enjoyable afternoon of poetry, visual art and fine food. Many thanks to all who attended the event and we still have a few copies of some of Susan's books available here.

Poetry Reading June 26 at Gallery 215!

June 26 will be a busy day at Gallery 215. Poet Susan McMaster will read from Paper Affair: Poems Selected and New at 1:30 pm. Susan is a resident of Ontario and right here along this shoreline. She is the President of the Canadian League of Poets, an editor, writer, radio personality, and supporter and friend of Gallery 215. This will be the third year that Susan has read here in the gallery and she is an engaging and enthusiastic presenter!

Also on June 26 the Gallery serves up the first in a series of occasional Sunday Lunches. 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. These are Chef's Choice, with a couple main and dessert options, very delicious and enjoyed right in the gallery surrounded by the art work of our 55 Gallery artists, all of which is for sale. And on the day of the Lunch, purchase any art work valued at over $50 and you will receive a special prize!

Anthony has photographs on display at Gallery 215 and also check out his facebook page, The Old Parsonage Selma. Deanna is a folk artist, and she has volunteered at Gallery 215 for 5 years!

.It was finally a nice sunny weekend and many folks turned out to enjoy the artwork and a delicious luncheon served by the members of the Maitland and District Development Association, who own and operate the Gallery.
